Guwahati is the largest city of Assam, India, as well as the largest metropolitan area in north-eastern India. Numerous ancient temples are located within the city, thus its other name as the "City of Temples".

One of Asia’s oldest cities, Guwahati’s myths and history go back several thousands of years. Some attractions are Uma Nanda Temple, a 17th century temple on a river island; Assam State Museum, which houses valuable antiques and artifacts; Kamakhya Temple, one of the most sacred Hindu shrines; Guwahati Planetarium, a center of astronomical research; and many others.

Guwahati’s city center is lively and interesting, with hotels, restaurants, shopping malls, bars, and multiplexes. Several bazaars offer wholesale and retail shopping of local products and handicrafts.

Guwahati is serviced by the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport at Borjhar, about 20 km west of the city center. It is well-connected with adjoining regions in India, as well as other cities in Asia.
