Dhaka, Bangladesh

Dhaka is the capital of Bangladesh and the principal city of Dhaka Division. Dhaka is a mega city and one of the major cities of South Asia where the Greater Dhaka area has a population of over 21 million people, making it one of the most populated cities in the world. Dhaka is also known the world over as city of mosques due to the more than 700 mosques in the city largely influenced by its colourful history, rich cultural traditions and Muslim majority nation.

Dhaka also produces great textiles including jute, muslin and cotton. In fact, textiles from Bangladesh has been ranked amongst one of the best in the world and the best quality of cotton is grown in Dhaka.

One of the most interesting fact about Dhaka is the interesting story behind its name. The most popular story told by the locals is that the city was named after the hidden Goddess Dhakeswari and other theories suggested that it could also be named after Dhak tree, or Dhak, the musical instrument.

Travellers have a variety to explore Dhaka including hopping onto a tuk-tuk, bicycle, taxi, private car or 3-wheeled rickshaw. There are more than 80 thousands rickshaw pullers in Dhaka itself.

Some of the places of attraction in Dhaka include Lalbagh Fort, Parliament building, Dhakeshwari Temple, Liberation War Museum and the National Botanical Garden of Bangladesh.
