Kathmandu is the capital of Nepal, standing at an elevation of approximately 1,400 metres. The ancient and refined traditional culture in Kathmandu is a convergence of Hindu and Buddhist beliefs, practiced by its highly religious people. It has also embraced other religions such as Jainism, Islam and Christianity.
Because of the city’s rich heritage, Kathmandu, which some call the "Land of Gods", is dotted with countless shrines, temples, palace squares, bazaars and sculptures. The UNESCO declared seven groups of monuments in the Kathmandu Valley as World Heritage Sites. In fact, the whole Kathmandu is considered an enormous treasure house of art and sculptures.
Kathmandu’s economy relies heavily on its exporting handicrafts, artworks, garments, carpets, pashmina, and paper. Tourism is also an important industry, ever since the country opened up to the outside world in the 1950s. Hindu and Buddhist pilgrims from all over the world visit various religious places located in Kathmandu and its surrounding districts.
As the gateway to Nepal and the Himalayas, Kathmandu is an enchanting city for tourists and devotees of all colours and creeds.
