Delhi, India

Delhi, the capital of India, is one of the world’s most historically layered cities. For centuries it has served as the political, cultural and commercial heart of northern India, shaped by the rise and fall of empires from the Delhi Sultanate and Mughal dynasty to modern India. Today, the city blends grand historical monuments with modern urban energy, offering travellers a fascinating introduction to the Indian subcontinent.

For visitors travelling to Bhutan, Delhi is also one of the most important aviation gateways. Direct flights connect the city with Paro, Bhutan’s only international airport, providing a convenient route into the Himalayan kingdom.

Delhi: A City of History and Culture

Delhi’s story stretches back thousands of years and its streets reveal a remarkable tapestry of cultures and architectural influences. Old Delhi preserves the character of a historic Mughal capital, with narrow lanes, bustling markets and centuries-old mosques and temples. Nearby, New Delhi showcases wide boulevards, colonial-era buildings and modern infrastructure.

Travellers exploring Delhi will encounter many of India’s most iconic landmarks including the Red Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site built by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in the 17th century, the towering Qutub Minar, one of the tallest brick minarets in the world, the India Gate war memorial and the magnificent Jama Masjid, one of India’s largest mosques.

Delhi is also renowned for its vibrant food culture, from street-side vendors serving local snacks such as chaat and parathas to renowned restaurants offering regional Indian cuisine.

Indira Gandhi International Airport

Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL) is the main airport serving Delhi and one of the busiest airports in South Asia. Located about 16 kilometres from the city centre, the airport has grown into a major aviation hub connecting India with destinations across Asia, Europe, the Middle East and North America.

The airport’s modern Terminal 3 is known for its spacious design, efficient passenger services and impressive artwork inspired by Indian culture. Facilities include international and domestic terminals, extensive duty-free shopping, airline lounges, restaurants and cafés, airport hotels and efficient immigration and baggage handling services.

Because of its global connectivity, Indira Gandhi International Airport serves as a major transit point for travellers heading to Bhutan.

Flights from Delhi to Bhutan

Delhi offers direct flight connections to Paro International Airport, Bhutan’s only international gateway. Both Drukair – Royal Bhutan Airlines and Bhutan Airlines operate flights between Delhi and Paro, making it one of the most convenient routes for travellers visiting Bhutan.

The flight duration between Delhi and Paro is approximately two to two and a half hours, depending on weather conditions and routing. Several flights operate each week, providing flexible travel options for visitors travelling between India and Bhutan.

A Scenic Journey into the Himalayas

The flight from Delhi to Bhutan is often considered one of the most scenic routes in the region. As the aircraft travels northeast, passengers are treated to spectacular views of the Himalayan mountain range.

On clear days, travellers may glimpse snow-capped peaks stretching across the horizon before the aircraft begins its descent into the Paro Valley. The final approach into Paro Airport is particularly memorable, as the aircraft navigates between steep forested mountains before landing in the narrow valley.

Delhi as a Gateway to Bhutan

Because of its strong international connectivity and close proximity to Bhutan, Delhi has long served as a major gateway for travellers visiting the Himalayan kingdom. Many visitors combine a journey through India’s cultural landmarks with a visit to Bhutan’s monasteries, mountain landscapes and spiritual traditions.

From the historic streets of Delhi to the tranquil valleys of Bhutan, the journey offers a fascinating contrast between two remarkable cultures shaped by the Himalayas.
